Fenwick Consulting Ltd sign up to Youth Employment Charter
08 November 2011
Fenwick Consulting Recruitment has signed up to the Youth Employment Charter launched by the Recruitment & Employment Confederation (REC) and aims to help build better bridges between the recruitment industry, education and employers to prepare today's young people for the world of work.
Jean Fenwick MD has been involved with advising school and coolege leavers for many years and looks forward to working closely with schools and colleges to drive employment opportunities for young poeple.
About the Charter:
With nearly one million young people aged between 16 and 24 currently not in employment or education, the Youth Employment Charter commits the recruitment industry to playing an active role in helping to prepare future generations of workers. The Charter will drive increased co-operation with schools and charities, enabling recruitment and employment experts to share their expertise directly with young people.
The initiative is a direct result of the REC’s Youth Employment Taskforce, launched two years ago, which last year made a series of practical recommendations to Government to counter soaring youth employment figures and cut-backs in government funding for career advice in schools.
Recruitment agencies and individual recruitment professionals signing up to the Charter will pledge their support to helping young people through initiatives such as:
- Developing links with local schools to help raise awareness of the world of work
- Actively promoting apprenticeships and internships to employers
- Providing opportunities for young jobseekers to work with recruitment agencies
- Participating in specific employment initiatives led by organisations such as the Prince’s Trust, Employers in Education and Business in the Community
- Working with local Jobcentres and work programme providers to develop opportunities and address barriers faced by specific categories of young jobseekers
Kevin Green, Chief Executive of the REC commented: “The Youth Employment Charter will harness the knowledge and expertise of recruitment professionals who are in a unique position to raise awareness and build the necessary bridges into the world of work. It is also an opportunity for key organisations and employment experts to get involved and Help give young people the positive start to working life they desperately need and deserve.”

Training Rights
New legislation will enable employees the right to request study and training leave. Businesses employing 250 or more staff members will be affected by the changes.
The training must be considered relevant, and Employers may refuse requests if they have a strong enough business case to do so.
Skills Minister Kevin Brennan said:
“We need to empower people to speak about training opportunities and the benefits they can bring to a business’ success.
“Many companies and organisations are very good at training their staff, but we need to make sure that all businesses are advising employees on what is on offer.
“This is where a regulation like Time to Train will be able to help people. It will give them the confidence to ask about training and skills, allowing them to take control of their own careers.”
